ABOUT THE GATHERING AT GETHSEMANE
The combination of religion, culture and politics is a palpable force in the lives of all Americans. Whether negative or positive, the chemistry of the mix directs and dominates discussions – and actions – in the home, on the job, in the media, and even in the church.
The Gathering at Gethsemane transforms these serious national issues into a creative story for a broad audience. It’s a story told by eleven African American men and women who are hand picked and brought together for Gethsemane, a Christian conference. As scholastic clergy, all participants know Gethsemane as the garden where Jesus’ humanity clashed with his divinity, where His spiritual willingness triumphed and toppled his bodily weakness.
As the participants wrestle with the political, cultural and theological issues that broadly impact African Americans as well as all America, they discover and expose their own personal struggles - Gethsemanes, which is revealed in multiple personalities. It is as Paul the apostle stated in Romans 7:21“When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.” This book shows that even in Christ there is an ongoing battle between flesh and spirit that one has to contend with.
Emotions run high, drama is consistent, humor is injected, poetry is reflected and a surprise ending leaves one shock and amazed. This is Hitchcock at its divine re-incarnation.
This book is aimed straight at the heart of the African American religious community, a market that’s grown tremendously with the advent of mega-churches and religious manuscripts. The theme is narrow enough to attract religious scholars and broad enough to connect with anyone who has ever had to overcome adversity. The mix of the personal and emotional, of the theological and intellectual, fully engages the African American reader who follows Christ – and the reader who is neither black nor Christian.
